The integrity of the grading reports is therefore an important factor. The most trustworthy and accurate diamond grading report is the GIA (Gemological Institute of America).

The main characteristics in a diamond report include the diamond’s colour, clarity, cut and carat and should also include the measurements and angles.

The GIA is viewed as the supreme authority in diamond reporting; after-all they did invent the system we use today. Over 95% of the diamonds we sell are graded, audited, tested, approved and certificated by the GIA.

2.Carat:

This refers to a measurement of weight as opposed to size. Originally a ‘carab’ was a seed which was used as a weight measure - this adaption is where carat derives its name. 1 carat is equal to 100 points; so 75 points is 3/4 of a carat.

Carat is the most price sensitive part of a diamond as it refers to the mass and a proportionate size. Diamonds are rare and as the size and carat weight increase they become very scarce.

3. Diamond Colour: Diamonds follow a colour spectrum that journeys from colourless through to light yellow. The rare diamonds have less yellow saturation and so are more valuable.

The GIA started the colour grading system in the 1950’s and as such are the masters of correct colour calibration (after all they did invent it).

The top colour is D and the spectrum follows down through the alphabet gaining more yellow as it proceeds. The top colours are D-E-F as they are colourless G-H-I-J are near colourless and represent excellent value. K-L-M start to show faint colour and are suited to yellow gold jewellery.

4. Diamond Clarity: Diamonds that are 100% pure crystalised carbon are known as IF or internally flawless. These diamonds are very rare as often very small contaminants are inside a diamond - known as inclusions.

Inclusions are ‘natures fingerprints’ and nothing to be worried about as long as you can’t see them.

Internally Flawless diamonds are essentially pure and clean of any inclusions; the next level down is VVS which means ‘Very Very Slight’ these inclusions are microscopic only visable through 50 x magnification.

The next range is VS which means ‘Very Slight’ that are detectable using a 10 x loupe but a good search is required and novices usually do not spot them. Then there is SI meaning ‘Slight Inclusion’ and these are still eye clean but are easily detected when enlarged 10 times under magnification; these diamonds are eye clean and a popular choice.

This refers to both the general shape of the diamond and also how well that shape has been made. We’ll refer to it as cut micro and cut macro:

Other diamond rough shapes like ‘flats’ suit shapes like emerald cuts and tear-drops. The shape of a diamond is usually guided by diamond rough retention as this increases the finished carat weight and will command a higher price.

In 1985 the famed three day diet first came on the scene. It boasted creation of a “specific metabolic reaction” to cause quick weight loss and the system to be cleansed. All the versions of this diet share in common specific steps that must be followed and foods that must be eaten in order for the diet to work. First day breakfast includes coffee (no sugar), one half a grapefruit, and a piece of toast with 1 Tbsp peanut butter. Lunch is a can of tuna, a piece of toast, and black coffee. For dinner it’s 3 ounces of chicken or lean meat, a cup of green beans, one cup of carrots, one apple, and one cup of regular vanilla ice cream. The other two days are about the same but with some substitutions such as hot dogs instead of lean meat. Supposedly it’s possible to lose as much as 10 pounds in only three days.

Baloney! How’s that for specific? And no baloney is not on the diet. There is no evidence for the so-called “specific metabolic reaction.” The only reason this diet would shed pounds is because of the lack of calories in the diet. In fact, because the diet is so low in carbohydrates a person could drop ten pound in three days. Of course most of that would be water weight because carbohydrates help the body to retain water. By the way, losing that much weight from not retaining water is dangerous as the body needs water to survive.

Because of binge eating after such starvation and because most of the weight lost is from water, the weight will quickly return after the three days. Deprive the body of water in three day cycles enough times and a person could develop kidney damage, dehydration, or a host of other dangerous conditions.

The 3 day diet is best treated as a no day diet. In other words, don’t do it.

In the current economic conditions, the cost of replacing entire heating systems can be prohibitive. Facilities managers are faced with difficult decisions regarding the most cost effective method for overcoming failing old heating systems. There are several issues when it comes to changing the entire heating system.

A common problem is that when the boiler plant is nearing the end of its life, the distribution system still appears to be OK. However there are always concerns about dirt being transferred from the existing system into new boiler plant.

The whole system including the boiler can be changed or a retrofit new boiler can be installed and connected onto an old system. Replacing the whole heating system is however very costly and, if the rest of the building isn’t being refurbished, it can create all sorts of problems with closures due to structural work or removal and replacement of pipe work.

Associated closure of buildings during refurbishment or replacement boiler plant can now be avoided by using a temporary portable plant room.

Adding a new boiler onto an old system can cause problems; damage to the new boiler can be caused by the detritus and deposits contained in the old system. There is a strong possibility that an older system will not have benefited from water treatment, dirt or air separation units. Older boilers therefore would have been exposed to progressive corrosion, resulting in large deposits of debris most of which is likely to be ferric in nature. When the system is drained down the silt and magnetite dries out; these deposits then turn it into a fine dust similar to talcum powder. This isn’t too much of a problem in older boilers, which tend to have large, low velocity waterways; however, with the installation of a new boiler this can cause major problems.

The fine powder gets distributed when you refill or flush the system and is then free to flow into the new equipment such as pumps and valves. The silt can also combine with the salts in the refill water and bake hard in the waterways of the new boiler plant. Being magnetic, the silt can clog around the armatures of canned rotor pumps and cause them to seize. Connecting the old system to the new boiler can also cause damage to or failure of the boiler’s heat exchanger; deposits act as an insulator, and the metal of the heat exchanger will retain the heat instead of passing it into the water. The lining of debris that would be left in the heat exchanger of the new boiler will reduce the efficiency of the new boiler. 

The old system can be separated from the new boiler plant by using a plate heat exchanger. The heat exchanger will create a barrier between the old system and the new boiler thus creating a new environment on the primary side of the heat exchanger onto which the new boiler is installed. By separating the new boiler plant from the old system you enable the water to be treated on boiler side, which will extend the life of the new boiler, as well as enabling you to use a modern high efficiency sealed and pressurised boiler.
