Clinical Research - Light at the End of a Tough Year

without comments

The clinical trial industry faced a difficult year during 2009 as CROs and trial centres competed against a number of pharmaceutical mergers, budget restrictions and budget cancellations. Some even went out of business but there was a light in the midst of the dark tunnel with the anticipation that things would pick up later in the year as pharma companies rejuvenated ongoing R&D activities.

Prospects came for those companies able to take advantage of the global trail by moving firmly into emerging markets such as Latin America and China. Roughly 12 of the main CRO’s with a grip on international markets made up almost 50% of the outsourcing market. Mergers took place episodically within the eClinical trade industry which gave rise to more opportunities for major players in the field.

Medical Device Outsourcing

It has been estimated that the global outsourcing industry will be worth roughly 26 billion dollars by the year 2014, rising at a compound growth rate of approx 14% between 2009 and 2014. While the regulatory services being one of the fast growing areas in the industry, CROs have also seen a growing demand in a full spectrum of clinical services from monitoring, data management and study design to patient recruitment.

Traditionally the regulatory haziness, up to 510 thousand approval delays and financial limitations faced by medical device firms meant numerous products were being tested in Europe before seeking approval for marketing in the USA, allowing these companies to save both money and time. This, however, may change soon as the new European Union medical device ruling comes into effect in March this year.

European Acquisition Ends 2009 with a Bang

Even with the global economic recession, 2009 made a hopeful start with numerous European CROs merging and acquiring US base firms with one international CRI making a firm move in Eastern and Central Europe.
And just as things started to slow down to a complete standstill, the sudden merger between Synexus and ClinPharm stunned everyone as the year ended with a bang.
